Building Boats Since 1990
The History of Calyber
Calyber Boatworks Boat Builder and President, Trevor Sherrick started in the industry in the early 1990’s working under iconic North Carolina boat captain and builder Buddy Davis. After building offshore rigs from 38’ to 78’ for Buddy Davis Trevor wanted to offer something different.
In 2001 Trevor started Calyber Boatworks building a 22’ Express. It was a 22’ true Carolina Hull, but on a smaller scale. He saw a need for the boat buyer wanting a Carolina fishing rig instead of the run of the mill boat. Calyber Boatworks went on to build many custom 25’, 27’, 29’, 30’ and 35’ Express, Center Consoles, Day Boats and Cabin Boats all on a Carolina Hull with the highest level of quality and workmanship throughout. Calybers have gone to the Caymans, Mexico, Japan, Australia and all over the U.S. Wherever they go, heads turn when a Calyber arrives.
In 2017 Calyber Boatworks decided to create a quality line of “production” boats starting with their 12’-8” Lil’ Buddy. A Carolina Hull under 13’. The Lil’ Buddy can be used as a run about, a tender or just an all-around fun boat. Today the Calyber 12 and 19 CC are in full production with plans for a 23 CC, 28 CC and 38 CC.

Kurt Heitmeier | Vice President, Research and Development

Because of his passion for boating at a very young age, Kurt Heitmeier knew he wanted to make his career in the marine industry. He graduated from the maritime academy at Texas A&M University and became a ship pilot on the Mississippi River in New Orleans. He has an Unlimited Tonnage license and loves being at the helm, whether it’s our 12’ Lil Buddy or a massive cargo ship. He also enjoys flying airplanes.
Kurt and Trevor first crossed paths while working together on an interesting custom boat build outfitting a 48’ sportfishing convertible with outboards. The concept was met with heavy skepticism because at the time outboards were reserved for smaller boats, and the large center console with an outboard lined transom wasn’t a common sight, as it is today. Trevor was no stranger to pushing the envelope of possibility, though, as he previously built the first sportfishing boat with IPS pod drives. Their realized shared interest in innovation compelled them to bring the custom boat beauty to the production boat availability.
